Shahid Beheshti University UNESCO Chair and Research Center on Human Rights, Peace and Democracy to Host Specialized Conference on “The Second Imposed War (The Twelve-Day War): Legal Analysis and Consequences”
The UNESCO Chair and Research Center on Human Rights, Peace and Democracy at Shahid Beheshti University, in cooperation with several affiliated academic institutions and on the anniversary of the military aggression by the Israeli regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran, will host a specialized conference entitled “The Second Imposed War (The Twelve-Day War): Legal Analysis and Consequences” on 16 June 2026.
During this academic event, experts and scholars from the fields of international law, criminal law, sociology, philosophy, and psychology will examine various dimensions of the Second Imposed War through a series of panels addressing the following topics: “Anticipatory Self-Defence in International Practice,” “A Humanitarian Law Perspective on the Assassination of Nuclear Scientists,” “Attacks on Critical Infrastructure,” and “The Extra-Legal Consequences of War.”
Announcing the event, Dr. Mehdi Sabooripour, Director of the UNESCO Chair and Research Center on Human Rights, Peace and Democracy, stated that one of the primary objectives of this interdisciplinary conference is to clarify the legal considerations surrounding the Twelve-Day War from the perspective of international humanitarian law, particularly with regard to acts such as the assassination of nuclear scientists and attacks on civilian infrastructure. Another objective is to facilitate scholarly dialogue on the broader consequences of war, including its psychological and sociological effects on society and the necessity of addressing these issues during the post-war period.
Dr. Sabouripour further noted that discussions conducted thus far regarding the Twelve-Day War have largely been legal in nature and focused on technical issues, such as methods for claiming compensation for damages. From this perspective, the legal considerations addressed in this conference concern topics that have thus far received relatively limited attention. He added that armed conflicts extend beyond legal debates and encompass numerous issues warranting reflection in other fields, including the redefinition of national identity, the need to safeguard the psychological well-being of society in the post-war period, and the impact of war on citizens’ perceptions of human rights, peace, and democracy. These interdisciplinary dimensions constitute an important focus of the conference.
The conference will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, at Salam Hall, UNESCO Chair and Research Center on Human Rights, Peace and Democracy, Shahid Beheshti University. Researchers, academics, and interested participants are warmly invited to attend.
