Introduction
“Philosophy and Religion” is one of the research departments of UNESCO Chair for Human Rights, Peace and Democracy. This department analyzes the relevant affairs in the philosophy of rights, religion, their common and contrastive points, their interaction with each other, and more importantly their relation with human rights. The question lies in this point that how these fields can be used to develop and internalize human rights and dignity. This department, similar to other research departments of the Chair, is under financial and moral support of UNDP.
Plans
The department, in the above-mentioned areas, has defined four fields of research with the cooperation of MA and PhD students of Law and Philosophy in the forms of research contracts. To proceed the research aims, the department could attract the financial and moral support from research centers and institutions. In these studies, the group has mainly concentrated on the required contemporary issues in Philosophy of Law and Religion as well as their relation with human rights. In other words, the department strives to introduce and solve some practical and theoretical affairs. The results will be issued in a number of books. In parallel with the extensive amount of research, the department is working on the translation of some featured English, French and Arabic books in the field of Philosophy of Law.
Additionally, the department had intended to organize a series of expert meetings in different subjects with the cooperation of students and professors’ lectures.
Besides in case of requests from students, the scientific and legal community of the country, training workshops in interesting subjects is held.
Sub-groups
The department consists of two sub-groups that each is responsible for coordinating and holding seminars and training workshops:
1. Philosophical Schools and Human Rights:
This sub-group intends to investigate the role of philosophical schools in forming and developing the concepts of human rights. To do so, the group has researched in the field of philosophical schools and also identified the schools related to law and legal affairs. Following that, the department has deliberated the mutual interaction between the schools and human rights from the perspective of modern scientists with an emphasis on the modern views. It is specifically tried to discuss the reflection of philosophical thoughts in human rights instruments.
2. The Studies of Religions and Human Rights
This sub-group, with an emphasis on the role of religions and enriching the concepts of human rights, has studied the position and role of human rights ( in a general sense) and tried to evaluate the available analyses of religions from the perspective of human rights and vice-versa assesses the challenges of religions in the fields of human rights. On this way, the relation between humans and God will be also included under the heading of human rights and public law and not necessarily is limited to Monotheistic Religions.
